In the book Persepolis , women have to be fully clothed at all times. They have to wear veils to cover their hair. They’re not allowed to show any skin or hair. The adults think that any hair women show , stimulates men, which is not true. Any women caught in public not wearing a veil would be punished by the government. They might even be killed. They can’t kill virgins though. The veil is called a burka or hijab. Headscarves are now seen as a sign of modesty and a symbol of religious faith. There are different types of head scarves the women must chose from to wear. They have a hijab, niqab, burka, al-amira, shayla, khimar, and the chador.
Marjis parents sent her to Europe because they thought it was too dangerous for her to stay in iraq. I think it was a bad decision because she had to live on her own and she made horrible choices and fell down some really bad paths. She got in with the wrong crowd and got into drugs and sex and just nothing good. I think she should have stayed with her parents or her parents should have come with her. Or at least a relative to stay with her so she wouldn’t have to figure all of this new life out alone. It was so new to her because all of this stuff was banned where she came from , so she went crazy with it.
